Ryan Rides Bike without Training WheelsAfter only one previous attempt, Ryan set out to finally conquer the wobbly bike without training wheels. Refusing repeatedly offers to help from Dad, Ryan discovered that if he got a rolling start down the wheelchair ramp on the street corner, he could pedal all the way across the street without falling over. After mastering this technique within a handful of attempts, he stumbled (literally) upon another technique, whereby he got a rolling start down the end of a neighbor's driveway. However, all was not easy with this innovative technique. When he attempted to return to his point of origin, he ran into navigational difficulties which caused him to crash into the curb beside the end of the driveway. Proclaiming himself completely uninjured, he repeated, each time ending with the same result. Subsequent crashes were immediately followed with the words, "Whoa, that was fun!" Erik, Ryan, dad and one of Erik's friends embarked upon a lengthy bike ride around the neighborhood. During this ride, Ryan also mastered the art of steering away from obstacles. But not without a few close encounters with stationary vehicles, such as cars and other bicyclists. There are still a few glitches to work out, but for the most part he's now got the hang of it. |
